For years there has been a stigma around cosmetic surgery. Countless jokes about botox “freezing” your face and making you expressionless. Comments about fillers giving women “duck lips” and making them look fake. This has been a challenge I’ve faced my whole career – judgement from other medical students when I told them about my career plans, or that snobby look that people give me when I tell them what I do for a living. Enough is enough! Let’s destroy the stigma around cosmetic services. Here are a few reasons why you should do that…

1. Your favorite celebrities get work done

When I was younger, I used to watch TV and wonder, “How do all these stars look SO beautiful all the time?” It wasn’t until I became a professional that I realized most actresses get work done! Some try to hide it, but others, like Cameron Diaz, are more honest. In her book, The Longevity Book, Diaz explains, “They’re to help people feel a little bit better about themselves”. This is the attitude that all celebrities should have, instead of trying to hide the fact that they need a little help with their appearance. Aging is natural, but what isn’t natural is pretending that you’ve maintained the same beauty for years with no interjections.

2. Advances in cosmetic surgery have made for much more natural results

The results coming from botox and fillers have changed so much in the past 10-15 years. Patients leave their doctors’ offices looking smoother and refreshed, but still like themselves. This is especially true if you see an experienced injector. Most of the comments that I receive from my patients are ones to the effect of “I look like myself, but better”. Cosmetic surgery in 2018 is all about small changes that lead you to feeling better and more confident!

3. Aging is natural, maintenance is necessary!

You wouldn’t keep the same house or car for 40 years without doing any updates on it! Your face is like a car – things will slowly break down, paint will peel, and you’ll have to update some parts! In your face, we lose collagen as we age, and fat pads start to droop. We get wrinkles from continuous smiling or eyebrow movements. Filler can help lift the face back to the way it used to be! Botox can help calm the muscles that cause wrinkles, so help smooth them away. There’s no shame in wanting to maintain your same beauty as you age! And starting early can help prevent future problems – getting baby botox at 25 or 30 is simply preventing future wrinkles, instead of trying to treat them after you get them.

These are just a few of the reasons why YOU shouldn’t be ashamed to go see a facial plastic surgeon, like me. Invest in yourself and your beauty, and if your friends judge you, you know that they’re just stuck in the past. One day (hopefully soon!) they will realize that there’s no shame in wanting to be a confident and beautiful version of yourself.
